Edwin Morgan 1920-2010

With the death of Edwin Morgan Scotland has lost its dynamic, challenging and generous national poet, and Scottish PEN has lost its honorary president. In his poetry, his internationalism and his warm and committed encouragement of writing in Scotland Edwin Morgan embodied the spirit and endeavours of PEN in its support for oppressed writers and cross-cultural understanding. His extraordinary creativity and delighted and delighting passion for language was an inspiration to PEN for many decades. Over successive years, Scottish PEN nominated him for the Nobel Prize for Literature, an accolade which, to our regret, he never received but richly deserved.
