Tawona Sithole is a writer and musician from Zimbabwe, living in Glasgow. He is co-founder of Seeds of Thought – an arts collective that aims to promote sharing of cultures through the arts. He grew up with music and spoken word that celebrates the morals and lifestyles of his ancestral family, Moyo Chirandu. As a son of this family he is better known as Ganyamatope. He is inspired to share his heritage with others as it helps him remain grounded, and also helps increase awareness of lesser known perspectives of his experience.

b'rainwash

lightning strikes in flashes of memory
as they come flooding back
snapshots of a thunderstorm
develop into a vivid consequence
pictured in life
here there and overall
picture the life
here there and overall
lying polluted beyond waste
being diluted beyond taste
hmn'wah!
yes, we've been through it
the brainwash
now we gather to recover
from the pain
today it's the old ritual
tomorrow the rain
today it's spiritual
tomorrow the same
that happy raindrops
may fall on inclined ground
b'rainwash of nature
whispering tears of joy
into these unhappy eyes
quenching thirsty ignorance
no more fighting fire with fire
so more fighting fire with water
words come clean
when washed in the downpour
deeds can be seen
when splashed in the outpour
and at the promise of dawn
we are in the morning dew
some old dignity is nothing new
make way for the way of life
some old dignity is coming through
time of recognition
fruitful seasons await
time of celebration
on a wooded backdrop
a stimulating lullaby
that happy raindrops
may fall on inclined ground
b'rainwash of nature
dancing rhythms of joy
into these unhappy hearts
today it's the old ritual
tomorrow the rain
today it's spiritual
tomorrow the same
