Writers' and broadcasters' freedoms are usually the first casualty of war

The achievement of peace is the world’s biggest challenge. In many respects the aims of PEN’s  Writers for Peace Committee underpin all of our activities. Its remit includes:

  • Investigating and understanding the roots of conflict
  • Exploring the nature of peace literature and how it can be promoted
  • Building cross-cultural communications within Scotland

Key aims are to champion freedom of expression, usually the firstcasualty of war, and to foster writing that contributes to a culture of peace and genuine understanding.

English PEN centre is campaigning on the proposed Bill on incitement to religious hatred. Should Scottish PEN also campaign on this issue?
